We’re going to dive into what gives her inspiration for every tagline, hashtag, and Oxford comma she produces for our clients.
Erica is originally from Wichita and has a Bachelor’s degree from K-State and an MBA from Emporia State. After college, she wanted to share her creativity with others and enrich the lives of the next generation, so she became a high school teacher. Throughout her 5-year career in education, she managed multiple social media accounts for different school activities and clubs. It was there she found her passion for social media and marketing which eventually prompted a career change. Combined with a wealth of knowledge in all things pop culture and trends, her writing is creative, engaging, and most importantly always on-brand no matter what industry she is writing for.
What is a professional accomplishment you’re proud of? I was recognized by the Wichita Business Journal as a 2024 Young Professional in Marketing, and that is something I’m really proud of. Making a career change wasn’t easy, but this recognition was further proof that I made the right choice!
How do you keep up with changes in the industry? I do a lot of reading, and of course, I follow experts on social media. However, one of the best ways I keep up with industry trends and enhance my copywriting skills is by engaging in discussions with other marketing and copywriting professionals. While the rules of grammar generally don’t change, how people interact with different forms of communication is constantly evolving, so it’s great to hear and learn from other industry professionals.
Who/what inspires you? More than anything, I’m inspired by my parents. They are the smartest, kindest, and most hardworking people I know. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. In my career, I’m inspired by marketing campaigns that have left a lasting impression on me. Being involved in creating engaging content that resonates with audiences in the same way is something that is really exciting to me. I’m also inspired by the idea that we can always do something to help others. I like that in marketing, I can help other people reach their goals by doing what I love—writing.
What do you like most about your position? I love that my position allows me to write and be creative every day. I get to write for a variety of different industries, so while one day I may be writing technical content for a client in manufacturing or construction, the next I’m creating copy that’s more casual and fun for a pickleball venue or salon!
What are your favorite tools to use for your position? LOTS of research goes into my writing, so you can often find me on LinkedIn, Instagram, HubSpot, and Reddit learning about the industries I’m writing for and absorbing tips from other writers.
What is your favorite thing about Hexcode? Our team! It’s fun to work with a group of people who all have diverse interests and personalities but still mesh so well together. We’re also always down for a coffee walk or sweet treat in the afternoon—which is obviously a plus.
If you could work with any brand in the world, who would it be? I would definitely choose to work with Harry Styles’ brand, Pleasing. I absolutely love Pleasing’s values, voice, and design. I would also love to work with Apple (to the disappointment of the Samsung users in our office). I’ve always loved their branding, and a lot of my projects, case studies, and essays in school were inspired by them.
